Israel Admits To Giving Ethiopian Women Birth Control Shots
A government official has for the first time acknowledged the practice of injecting women of Ethiopian origin with the long-acting contraceptive Depo-Provera.
Health Ministry Director General Prof. Ron Gamzu has instructed the four health maintenance organizations to stop the practice as a matter of course. The ministry and other state agencies had previously denied knowledge or responsibility for the practice, which was first reported five years ago. Gamzu’s letter instructed “all gynecologists in the HMOs not to renew prescriptions for Depo-Provera for women of Ethiopian origin if for any reason there is concern that they might not understand the ramifications of the treatment.” Gamzu also instructed physicians to avail themselves of translators if need be.
Gamzu’s letter came in response to a letter from Sharona Eliahu-Chai of the Association of Civil Rights in Israel, representing several women’s rights and Ethiopian immigrants’ groups. The letter demanded the injections cease immediately and that an investigation be launched into the practice.
About six weeks ago, on an Educational Television program journalist Gal Gabbay revealed the results of interviews with 35 Ethiopian immigrants. The women’s testimony could help explain the almost 50-percent decline over the past 10 years in the birth rate of Israel’s Ethiopian community. According to the program, while the women were still in transit camps in Ethiopia they were sometimes intimidated or threatened into taking the injection. “They told us they are inoculations,” said one of the women interviewed. “They told us people who frequently give birth suffer. We took it every three months. We said we didn’t want to.”EX-FUCKING-CUSE ME?
Underneath the rage at this, I have a tickle of grim ironic amusement. It feels like they’ve looked at Nazi Germany and thought “hey, actually, that worked really well. We should do that.”
i watched this on the news, it was in melbourne in 2009, it’s about a lady that was waiting for the train, and she had her baby in a pram, and as the train was coming the pram rolled onto the tracks, the lady closest to the edge is the mother, she tried to grab the pram but it feel onto the track, amazingly the baby survived with literally only a scratch on the forehead because it was still strapped securley into the pram, people say that the dark shadow over the pram is some kinda of guardian angel that kept the baby alive

That would be because it’s very obvious in the original footage that the shadow is a video effect completely unrelated to the baby. In fact, if you were going to go for a supernatural explanation, it would be far more plausible to say that the black shadow PULLED the baby onto the track, as that is where it appears throughout the security footage.

That’s not victim blaming, guys. One sided representation, yes, but this may be a worksheet given to girls only for all the information that is here. Coming up with strategies to avoid date rape is a valid exercise… it’s like locking your car and not leaving your valuables in it, even though there’s a police presence and a great rehabilitation programme for thieves in the area. It’s probably not going to be a problem, but if you get unlucky, the consequences are severe, so it’s worthwhile coming up with strategies to avoid it.
We don’t need to abolish education in risk factors and risk mitigation for people who might end up in the position of being a victim and replace it with anti-perpetrator education all at once. We need both.

There is murmur among the steampunk community that the aesthetic is being co-opted, but honestly, I think these windows are lovely. It’s not the usual steampunk—it’s a fairy fantastical marionette take on the style, and I like what they’ve done with it.

okay real talk, this is completely true.

Because where I come from… they teach both. You learn both things in sex education in school.
Every person in the country is taught that rape is very bad. And people still do it. Rape still happens. So it is a very good idea to teach people how to avoid getting into a situation where it could happen.
Here’s the thing… people -always- break the rules. Most rapists -know- that what they are doing is wrong. Just like most murderers, tax-dodgers, drug abusers, thieves, and arsonists also know what they’re doing is wrong. They’re told a thousand times over, “don’t do it”… and they’ll still do it. Crime will always happen. But it can be made far less likely with the right measures taken against it
I am with this. You have to have both. However, care needs to be taken to ensure that rape is actually seen as heinous, not hardcore. Not an “achievement” crime, the way other crimes, like the assault involved in getting into a bar fight can be seen, for instance, and more on a level like murder, or bashing an unprepared defenceless person. “Don’t rape” is widely taught in boys’ sex ed classes. It is evident from male youth culture that the message isn’t getting across regarding just how serious a crime it is.
Rape and the various other forms of sexual assault are NOT rare crimes. Outside of particular subcultural circles where the “rules” are quite different to mainstream society, comparable crimes like murder, serious assault, and arson are rare. Rape is terrifyingly common. The message is clearly not getting across.
